Phil Manley: "Life Coach" (Thrill Jockey, 2011)


Still Thrill Jockey happens to us with excellent output which was not expected. Guitarist Phil Manley in the post-rock band Trans Am and here offers a foray into the intricacies of the roots of his inspiration. Firstly there is the pocket; photo to the limit of the horrible, Manley played guitar on a background of blue sky and clouds, surprising reasons similar to his t-shirt, hat, fishing bonus . The tone is given, we are dealing here with a record devoid of any pretensions. Besides the titles of nine pieces for this album come remove any possibility to take seriously its duty (Make Good Choices, Work It Out, Gay Bathers ...). But the aesthetic is in sync with the music of the disc, giving us a work so nice listen to it is addictive.

outset, the first piece "FT2 Theme" takes us into a world very close to Krautrock, with shades of Tangerine Dream supported by cheap beatbox. But it's still very successful, resulting, can clear a smile or even the feeling of omnipotence when listening to this piece while walking in the street. Wonderful feeling giving us the opportunity to believe we're actually in a movie and lots of good things to the point we arrived. If this piece is the premise of this life coach is successful, I feel better already.



Following this enlivening opening, the rest falls into a register sometimes darker, more ambient but all in all imbued with a heady lightness. A disc that is listened from beginning to end without dead time, the repository rock fans that I likes to immerse myself in letting my moments of melancholy ...
