Blue Water White Death "S / T" (graveface, 2010)

In the category of strange disc released last year, one can find this gem that has subtly crept into my top 2010. The output of Blue Water White Death is, I think, completely unnoticed. And yet. This is a collaboration between two big names in pop alternative is Jamie Stewart from Xiu Xiu and Jonathan Meiburg of Shearwater . Note that I'm not a big fan of these two groups, the only contact I had with Xiu Xiu is with their collaboration " XXL " with the Italian group Larsen, entitled "? Spicchiology? " Exit to the major label in 2007.

Shearwater I know that name, I listened with half an ear and two of their albums have not really hooked. Meiburg is also a member of Okkervil River , Band I like a bit more. Mostly because of this song:

The story behind this collaboration between Stewart and Meiburg is interesting, the two musicians were locked for a week in the studio and within a few days laid a demanding recording and bold. It emanates a viscéralité involved in each of the 8-track disc component, a skin-deep emotion of the song Meiburg and a desire to experiment that surprises the listener in every corner. The play "Death for Christmas" in particular got me a smile by his audacity. A sparse acoustic guitar, floating above a slick harmonium, percussion apocalyptic, all played over a recording of African songs from start to the end of the song, showing its presence in the quietest moments ... the idea is really interesting.

Dark, gloomy, tortured ... the album is heavy but filled with good ideas that come Painted a pop record pressing experiments, a little messy, but make listening memorable. Each piece brings with it its share of surprises, with sounds coming homogéinité apparent break. Like what we must be wary of rising waters ... blue is death, white is the sea ...
